We used to get off the bus at the Queens pub & walk down the road opposite to do our underground training at Wigan Junction Colliery. There was a special training gallery, down the pit...A few thousand lads started their pit life experience down there..

The road doesn't seem to be on that map Gaffer, it's now a single track on modern maps..

Art, did you work with a quality chap by the name of Jack Kinane at any time perchance?

Is the road on this shot?
You may be interested in the notes from the back side of the map.

Rings a bell that name, but I can't say for certain. I knew a Mick Kinane from Goose Green, used to play darts with him..

I think Mick was Jack's Son, I know he came from Goose Green. Died young. Jack never did get over losing him.

Mr. J. E. Rayner, he's mentioned in that post by gaffer in his photo. He's also mentioned as a benefactor to St. John's church in Hindley Green, where he leaves all mineral rights The Vicarage scroll down. Now, there's a Rayner Park in Hindley, same man?

Hi Art,You would have met my Father-in-law--Teddy Baldwin and an Uncle Tommy Bell---they were both instructors there.
I did adult training--Three weeks there---then worked at the Maypole for eleven months till it closed.

Dingerbell, I do recall a Tommy, a stocky well built chap with snow white hair, very friendly with us 15 year olds. Seein' it was our first "real work" experience (I had been down a couple o'pits before I left school)
1953 when I did me three months..Low Hall, Clayton St school & the Junction, plus odd days working at the Maypole & Ince Moss

Brings back so many memories, I did my training there in about 1963/4 but my best memory was every week for a whole day I went with one of the old "firemen" to the other levels of the pit and did a walk around checking for gas and "fall ups" etc just me and him in all that level. Then back to the cage to go to another level for an hour or two.
There was so much stuff in that pit - unbelievable, huge great haulage motors and the like. Great experience for my short stay there before going to Kirkless etc etc.

You don't need to go as far as the Queens at Bicky.I'm looking at the site through an upstairs window. The road way opposite the Queens is the one taken by pitmen going to the Maypole. The Junction buildings shown on the maps were the engine sheds. The pit yard ,baths and winding house were where Blakeleys buildings are,the bath house is still there.
